WEINGUT TAUBENSCHUSS
Weinviertel, Austria
Founded in 1670, Taubenshuss is a pioneer of Austria’s Weinviertel region, and a member of the Österreichische Traditionsweingüter (ÖTW) or Traditional Wineries of Austria. With wine produced here since the 14th century, its 22 hectares of vineyards were selected from among the best sites of the region by the ancestors of the current generation at the helm, Markus and Thomas Taubenshuss.
Taubenschuss Weingut has always had a reputation for innovation, and was one of the first wineries in Austria to sell its own wine in branded bottles in 1941. While continuing to produce the exceptional Grüner Veltliner and Pinot Blanc that made the house famous, Markus and Thomas have also led new innovations with the addition of award-winning sparkling wines and a deep commitment to sustainable winemaking.
In addition to organic certification, Taubenshuss practices regenerative farming, producing its own compost for organic fertilization and grazing sheep in the vineyards to reduce mechanical impact and fuel consumption. All harvesting is done by hand, and cellar practices focus on spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts and other minimal-intervention winemaking techniques.
The 15 meter-deep loess soils of the region, along with deposits of limestone, gravel and sand, are perfectly suited to the production of Grüner Veltliner and Burgundy varieties. The resulting wines, some of which emerge from 60 year-old vines, are known for their purity, minerality, and dense character, creating benchmarks for the region.
